Announcements & Notices
Next General Chapter Meeting Date: July 23rd, 2009 Time: 3:30 Tour followed by business meeting. Location: Excel Energy High Bridge Plant, Downtown St. Paul.
High Bridge is a combined cycle generating facility which produces electricity from two sources of energy: 1) Natural gas is used as a fuel in a combustion turbine, similar to a jet engine; 2) Exhaust from the combustion turbine also is used to make steam in a heat recovery steam generator.
2009 CHMMunity UPDATE Plans for the North Star Chapter’s 2009 CHMMunity work are beginning to develop and we are looking for members who might be interested in participating. This year we will have more opportunities for members who only may be able to help on a project for only 1-2 days, and more opportunities that do not necessarily mean traveling to Voyageurs National Park (VNP), such as basic research or data management.
2009 CHMMunity Project – Rat Root River Restoration VNP has asked if the North Star Chapter (NSC) would be interested in providing technical support on a project to reestablish the spring walleye spawning runs on the Rat Root River, which flows through the National Park into Rainy Lake. The project is being supported by VNP and the Rainy Lake Sport Fishing Club (RLSFC), with help from MPCA and MDNR. As background, the Rat Root River historically had large runs of spawning walleyes each spring, however, in recent years these runs stopped. The Park along with the RLSFC is starting to plan investigations to determine what caused the change and to conduct watershed improvement projects to restore the river.
Our Chapter is being asked to provide technical resources for water quality surveys and other special projects. Work would begin in 2009, and would likely be a continuing effort for a few years as the project develops.
Project Planning Opportunity Interested in participating on planning team? VNP is trying to get an initial planning meeting organized in the next several weeks between the VNP, RLSFC, CHMMunity, MPCA and MDNR to discuss this overall project. If interested contact Loren Larson.
Looking for Project Participants If you might be interested in participating in this project, please contact Linda Daniels.
Reminder - - participation is not limited to NSC members; if you have coworkers, family or friends that might be interested, please let them know.
