Park to conduct extensive water quality testing of the park's large lakes in 2004 and 2005. The team brought together volunteers from many communities to collect water samples, conduct laboratory analyses, and interpret the resulting data. This work will provide Voyageurs National Park with an essential baseline of water quality information that will be used to recognized and manage changes in water quality over time. The ACHMM North Star Chapter began volunteering in 2003, assisting park staff with water quality testing and monitoring for exotic species. Their commitment to the park has brought together partner organizations form the United States and Canada, including government agency partners and members from several non-governmental organizations. This work would not likely have occurred without the contributions of the volunteers from ACHMM.

The George B. Hartzog Jr. Award for Outstanding Volunteer Group Service

Managers (ACHMM-NSC) to the George B. Hartzog Jr. Outstanding Volunteer Group Service award for volunteer service in 2005 at Voyageurs National Park. The North Star Chapter has contributed significantly through volunteerism to the preservation of water resources in and around the park by providing park managers, partners and stakeholders previously unattainable knowledge of the water resources we share and manage. ACHMM-NSC dedicated 822 hours of service to support a spatial characterization of water quality on the Namakan Reservoir in 2005. The Namakan Reservoir sits astride the international boundary between the U.S. and Canada, having multiple jurisdictions, interested stakeholders and partners. The water quality characterization project administered, funded and carried out by the North Star Chapter in 2005 joined the stakeholders working in the various jurisdictions in and around the park and focused on one shared interest, water quality. The volunteer service provided by the North Star Chapter has been of the highest professional standard and has provided park staff with the data needed to manage resources for future generations.
